Clinical Overview

Getting More Effective Outcomes

Our clinical model is rooted in evidenced-based treatment. Every adolescent at Vive Adolescent Care receives an individualized treatment plan tailored to their unique emotional, behavioral, and clinical needs. Shortly after admission, each client completes a comprehensive series of assessments that helps the treatment team better understand their strengths, challenges, and diagnoses. These findings are used to develop a personalized treatment approach designed to promote meaningful progress and lasting stability.

Clinical Therapies

Vive also offers a deeper dive into the following types of clinical therapies:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.

Strategic Family Therapy

Strategic Family Therapy combines two major therapeutic models, strategic therapy and family therapy. Within the safety of therapeutic setting, strategic family therapists replicate family interactions and conversations, prompting and engaging participants with provocative questions and discussions. During these sessions, problems present themselves, and the therapists can uncover the person's strengths and abilities at solving their own problems drawing on internal resources that they hadn't before acknowledged or even realized that they possessed.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a counseling method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior. This type of therapy is often used to address addiction and helps people become motivated to change the behaviors that are preventing them from making healthier choices. It can also prepare individuals for further, more specific types of therapies.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and Meditation is a focus on being intensely aware of what one is sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgement. Practicing mindfulness and meditation involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress. The overall evidence of mindfulness and meditation exercises cna help with stress, anxiety, pain, depression, and insomnia.

Recreational Therapy

Recreational Therapy (RT) is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the needs of individuals with illness and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being. The purpose of the RT process is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual fuctioning in order to facilitate full participation in life.

DBT Group Therapy

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy tries to identify and change negative thinking patterns and pushes for positive behavioral changes. DBT may be used to treat suicidal and other self-destructive behaviors.

The Personalized Treatment Plan

While at Vive Adolescent Care, each client receives a personalized treatment plan created together with the therapist to which they are assigned. Upon admission, each client also receives a battery of assessments that helps to formulate specific clinical approaches applicable to them.

Each client is assigned a primary therapist who works closely with them throughout their stay. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled according to the client’s clinical needs, with most adolescents meeting privately with their therapist at least twice each week. Because lasting progress depends on family involvement, parents or guardians also participate in weekly family therapy sessions that strengthen communication, address underlying concerns, and help prepare the family for a successful transition home.

standard vive assessments

We run each patient through the following assessments while at Vive:

Beck's Anxiety (Anxiety scale)

Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale

PHQ-A (Depression scale)

SCARED Anxiety Questionnaire (Differentiates types of anxiety)

SWAN - ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD & types)

MDQ (Mood Disorders/Bipolar)

SQAY (Suicide risk & resiliency questionnaire)

All of the above assessments are scored and reviewed by a therapist and psychiatric provider. Once completed, there is a Vive Assessment Summary Form that is completed by the case management team.

Assessment Summary

Upon Discharge, the clients complete the Beck's Anxiety, PHQ-A, and SQAY Assessments once more and then added to the Vive Assessment Summary Form. This Assessment Summary is finalized upon Discharge and provides insights into their progress during their stay. A copy is provided to parents/transport team as part of their discharge packet.

There are also two separate Discharge Summaries completed upon discharge. One is completed by their therapist (Clinical Summary) and the other by their psychiatric provider (Medical Summary). A copy of these will also be provided to parents/transport team as part of their discharge packet.

The discharge packet will also include other information such as educational materials on safety, their diagnoses, discharge medication list, medication education sheets, lab results, client's current medications plus a 1-month prescription, personal rec therapy activities, etc.

We also can do further testing for personality disorders, scales for side effects of the medications, etc. We typically do not do any Weschler or other IQ/processing speed assessments. We can do some Autism Testing, either standard or high-functioning via CARS-2 and/or ADOS-2.
